It's not possible to change the die-cut window size or to eliminate it. However, PrestoPhoto offers a 10 x 10 hardback emboss hardcover. It's basically hardback wrapped with material of your choice and instead of window the book will have an image adhered to the cover. Here's the link:

Look at the third one down.
The die-cut window size is 3x2 and during the cover creation stage you'll have choice of how you'd like the image to appear in the window.
To answer question number 2, many new customers ordered a softcover book with few pages (10-15) to see the print quality. The book will be bind with saddle stitch binding but you can surely see the interior quality.

1. cover
is it either possible to change the size of the die-cut window,
or to remove the die-cut, and just have it be plain?
it either of those options are not possible,
then what are the dimensions of the window, and the place wrt the interior pages?
2. sample prints
is it possible to get raw prints of the interior without ordering a book for a lower cost?
in order to see how the colors of each page related with respect to each other?
