The Dement Booklet: Replica Edition and Backstory Edition

I have worked for more than two years to properly photograph, edit and enhance each of the 100 sheets of vintage Americana found in Sam Dement's family booklet. I have created two of the most beautiful and striking reproductions in the tradition of the great Edward Curtis. Curtis had President Ted Roosevelt and financier JP Morgan to help. My advantages are different, but at least as powerful. First, my family heritage includes the ranching and Westward Ho! spirit found in the material. Second, modern research powers analysis.

The original Dement Family Booklet lives in safe deposit, far from the sun and far from the claws of library and research facility. The booklet is a family treasure as well as an essential record. Even were an individual able to gain access to the booklet, the condition would make proper use difficult, sometimes not possible without access to digital enhancement and hours of background research.

These two parallel publications do the work for the scholar and provide everyone with a glimpse into the mindset and motivations of those who would go west: Northwest from France's Calais in 1066 to change Britain forever, west across the Atlantic from England to the American Colonies to change North America forever, west from those 13 colonies as they became a nation, to change the wilderness of mid America forever, and finally along the Oregon Trail to California gold and Oregon natural prairies to bring an rugged wilderness from stone age to the modern age in a generation.

What manner of men and women and children were these? Meet the Dements and the Stanfields. They are a talented lot, minstrels, story tellers, blacksmiths, shopkeepers and ultimately the captains of the complex settlements known as "western ranches." Family members take on all the roles commonly found in a city ranging from political boss to medicine man, from homemaker to artist.

These two publications about the Dement Family Booklet expand human understanding of itself, not with psychoanalysis but by unveiling the true processes. stevenmeans@me.com 541-260-1457
