Tiébélé
South of Burkina Faso (West Africa)
Far from the sprawling African urban centres, there are peoples still living according to very ancient traditions, passed on from generation to generation.
In these isolated areas, spectacular architectural forms and wall decorations are created. Each year after the harvest, village women gather in order to restore and repaint their mud dwellings, washed clean by the wet season’s relentless rains. With their hands and chicken feathers as brushes, together they create an art amazingly dynamic in its technique, compositions, and colours.
The motifs, created with natural pigments and dyes extracted from plants, are a reflection of these women’s lives, and illustrate their communal spirit.
